What To Bring On The Tongariro Crossing

There are a few things to consider whilst embarking on the challenging yet awe-inspiring journey across the remarkable volcanic landscape. Depending on the time of year, the weather conditions will impact how you dress and pack for the hike. The climbs can be steep and the weather can be unpredictable, so its best to cover all bases.

SHOES

In winter, the track is covered in snow and ice, therefore we recommend wearing insulated hiking boots to keep you warm and dry. Please avoid runners and sneakers as the snow can cause the trail to be slippery. These shoes don’t offer enough grip and are not insulated enough.

In Summer, the treks are dry and free of slippery snow so any hiking shoes/trailer runners that are comfortable and lightweight are recommended.

CLOTHING

As the hike will generally start fairly early, you may experience some morning frosty weather at the beginning of the hike. So we recommend wearing comfortable base layers underneath that can be removed throughout the hike as the temperature warms up. Thermals and fleece are highly recommended as well as waterproof down jackets. Avoid denim!

These are our general recommendations:
Summer: walking trousers, 1 light top and 2 warm top layers (wool, merino, thermals, fleece, soft shell etc. are good layers), Waterproof raincoat.

Winter: thermal longs and/or walking trousers & over-trousers, 3 warm top layers (wool, merino, thermals, fleece, soft shell etc. are good layers), Waterproof raincoat, Warm hat and gloves.

SUN PROTECTION

Sun protection is equally as important. The potential of sunburn can still happen in Winter with the sun reflecting off the snow. Make sure to start your hike already wearing sunscreen, and pack in your bag for reapplication through the day. A hat and a pair of sunglasses are recommended too.

IN YOUR BAG

In your backpack, these are some essentials you will need for the day

  • Personal medication or first aid basics (asthma inhaler, band-aids, paracetamol etc
  • Drink bottle with at least 1 – 2 litres of water.
  • Lunch and light snacks
  • Camera!
  • Phone battery pack (optional)
  • Toilet paper
